Tips for Great Dental Care By Dentist in Virginia

February 24, 2015

When it comes to dental care, there are many aspects that you need to consider. Without proper planning and oral care routine, you may end up with a mouth filled with cavities. Here are the most effective dental care tips by Monarch Smiles, a dental clinic in Vienna, to help you keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Make sure you are adequately caring for your teeth and gums. Brush and floss your teeth twice a day, and use a good quality mouthwash at least once a day. This is one of the most common ways to protect your teeth and gums. Brushing your teeth is the best method to keep your teeth clean; however, do not brush hard, as brushing too hard can trigger irritability, discomfort, gum problem, and eventually loose teeth. To avoid these problems, use a soft bristled toothbrush and make use of gentle, circular brushing movements while brushing. If you are not sure what oral care products are good for you, then better ask your family dentist to suggest some. Moreover, it can also help you prevent any troubles from ever occurring.

Eating nutritious and healthy food is another way to achieve or maintain good oral health. Stay away from foods that lead to cavities and other oral problems. Avoid food items such as pretzels, chips, candy, and other unhealthy foods, because these food items stick and remain on the surface of your teeth, causing unexpected and expensive oral problems. If you consume foods that are sticky, then it is advisable to brush and floss your teeth as soon as possible once you are done eating. Eat foods such as apples, raw carrots, and celery, that work as cleaning agents. These foods normally clean your mouth as you eat them.

Visiting your dentist at least twice a year is highly recommended. However, visit more than twice if your situation calls for it. There are countless advantages of periodic dental visits, and one of the most important is, it can help you avoid annoying oral issues from occurring. Moreover, frequent visits to a dental clinic will make you more comfortable with your dentist.

If you experience pain or irritation when eating or drinking hot and cold food and beverages, then schedule a visit to your dentist to ascertain whether you have sensitive teeth or not. Sensitive teeth might be a measure of significant dental problems, such as nerve swelling, cavity, or nerve irritation, which you do not wish to ignore.

How to find a Family Dentist in Virginia

February 18, 2015

Due to busy professional and personal schedules, we are unable to follow appropriate oral care routine. As a result of inappropriate oral care routine, at some stage of life, every one of us experiences oral problems and tends to search for a qualified dentist in our region. If your family is big, then chances of visiting a dental clinic increase. Therefore, it is necessary for you to find a family dentist who can take care of the oral health of each and every member of your family.

However, there are few important points to consider when you select a family dentist. The first and the most important aspect to consider is that you are comfortable with the dentist. When you meet the dentist for the first time or communicate to him or her on a phone, you might get an idea if you are tuning with him or her properly. Try to conclude, whether the dentist is amicable or not, is able to answer all your questions, and is polite with the tone while explaining the oral problem. If you are planning to develop a long-term relationship with a dentist, then it is necessary that you are comfortable and happy with him or her.

The second most important point to consider while finding a family dentist is the type of oral care services offered by the dentist. Nowadays, dentists are proficient enough to deal with all kinds of oral problems, yet there is a difference between cosmetic dentistry and general dentistry. There are plausible chances that a family dentist may not be proficient in cosmetic dentistry, and in case, if you require cosmetic treatments  in the future, then you should confirm that he or she is going to be as good in the cosmetic dentistry as he or she is with the general dentistry.

The third most important point to consider is the location of the dentist. It is advisable to have a dentist who is located near to your house, because you will certainly not prefer a long drive when you are dealing with oral problems. It is a wise decision to find a dentist who is situated nearby your residence.

The fourth most important point to consider is the working hours of the dental clinic. Different dentists have different timings; some are available only in the evening, morning, or at some fixed hours, whereas some of them are available from morning to evening. Therefore, find a dental clinic that suits your schedule so that you do not have to make any adjustments every time you fix an appointment with the dentist.

The fifth most important point to consider is the rates and payment terms of the dentist. At the time of tough global economy, it is wise to avail services of a dentist who has reasonable rates and flexible payment terms. You can select the most appropriate dentist for you and your family after considering all these important points.

Ordinary dental bridges, at some point of time, need to be replaced, whereas, dental implants are designed to last a lifetime.

Patient can enjoy a trouble-free life – Dental implant treatment is the most trusted method to regain a beautiful smile. How to Overcome Dental Phobia? Explains Dentist in VA, Dr. Neil Flenniken

October 2, 2014

For most patients, even the thought of visiting a dental clinic sends a jolt of anxiety through their body. Due to some known or unknown reasons, we all fear the dentist, and that’s what we call dental phobia. However, according to Dr. Neil Flenniken, an experienced dentist in VA, when it comes to triggering a fear response, small things can set people off like an upcoming trip to the dentist.

Dental phobia in an individual can set in early. Frightening comments from friends and parents, such as “If you don’t brush and floss your teeth daily, you will have to visit a dental clinic,” can leave an enduring negative impression. More commonly, an upsetting experience at the dental clinic during childhood causes nervousness that carries over into adulthood, says Dr. Neil Flenniken, a D.D.S. from Howard University in Washington D.C. However, today, with the advancement in science and technology, there is no need for anyone to fear dental pain, because modern dentistry is virtually painless.

Latest Dental Tools and Products

As stated above, the availability of latest tools and products has made the modern dentistry almost painless. The latest dental equipment has come a long way over the past few decades. For instance, needles that inject numbing agents are slimmer compared with flatter versions of the past. In the past, needles were used repeatedly and sterilized between patients; however, these days, needles once used are disposed permanently. Dr. Flenniken says repeated use blunts a needle’s point with the time, triggering more pain upon injection. The latest set of dental tools and methods aid dentist slow the rate at which medicine works its way into the gums, reducing uneasiness from the pressure of the medication as it’s instantly released from the syringe.

Calming Dental Anxiety

A long list of medications and new dental products help lessen pain, too. Products like dental patches and topical anesthetic used to numb gums keep patients relaxed during injections and deep cleaning. During the dental procedures, Nitrous Oxide is used to relax patients and intravenous conscious sedation is used to ease pain and discomfort. To truly calm your dental phobia, it never hurts to remember that inside the dentist’s white coat is a person who cares as much about your comfort as your teeth.

Tips to Overcome Dental Phobia

Are you experiencing oral problems, but not visiting a dental clinic because of dental phobia. Here are some useful tips by Dr. Neil Flenniken, an experienced dentist in Virginia, that will help you overcome your fear.

•    Talk to your dentist, and if he or she doesn’t respond or comply to your questions, then you should find another one. A good dentist should begin a visit by asking you formal questions related to you, your family, and your profession. Such questions will create a friendly and comfortable atmosphere and will remove the anxiety.

•    Do some homework before you visit a dental clinic. Ask your dentist every question you have in your mind in terms of your problem and respective treatment. There is nothing wrong in asking such questions to your dentist.

•    Give a cue during the treatment. At any point of time, during a dental procedure, if you are uncomfortable and want your dentist to stop working immediately, then give him a cue. For example, you can raise your hand to let your dentist know about your condition.

Dentist in VA, Explains How to Maintain Good Oral Health After Gum Disease Treatment

July 29, 2014

Most patients across the globe experience the gum disease because they don’t pay proper attention to their daily oral hygiene routines. As a result, they need to undergo some sort of gum disease treatment, whether it is a surgical intervention to excise diseased tissue or a thorough cleaning to remove bacteria from underneath the gums. However, if you adopt your old habits after undergoing gum disease treatment, then there is a higher chance that you may face a serious risk for a relapse of gum disease.

To diminish the chances of developing any serious oral issues after gum disease treatment, it is essential that you maintain a good oral routine after being treated by your dentist. In fact, you should discuss suitable oral care habits and techniques with your dentist as a part of the treatment planning process.

To maintain good oral health after gum disease treatment, you should brush twice a day for at least two minutes at a time. Along with brushing, daily flossing will also help you to decrease the presences of plaque and tartar that contain the oral bacteria that can lead to gum disease. According to dentists, patients with a history of gum disease should also add a good-quality mouthwash to their routine as a supplementary anti-bacterial measure.

Remember, after gum disease treatment, nothing can go as far as a proper dental hygiene; therefore, don’t forget to obey these basic oral care rules that are as follows:

  1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, for two minutes
  2. After brushing, don’t forget to floss
  3. Make use of an antibacterial mouthwash, as it ensures all round protection from plaque and tartar
  4. Quit smoking!  It can damage your gum tissues, and decrease healing time after gum disease treatment
  5. Visit your dentist every three months, to remove plaque buildup and maintain good oral health

For patients who have undergone gum disease treatment, it becomes even more imperative for them to keep up with their dental visits to their dentist and hygienist.

The most important point to remember is  when you protect your mouth against gum diseases, you directly promote good health and wellness. A healthy mouth truly is the gateway to a healthy body.  Good oral care routines and routine cleanings are needed in preserving oral health and keeping gum disease away.

After going through initial gum disease treatments, your dentist and hygienist will have you visit your dental clinic every three months to maintain good oral health.  Seeing your dentist and hygienist four times a year will help them keep your gum disease in remission and keep your chances of reinfection at bay.

For routine checkups, a dental care clinic in Virginia that is near your home or on the way to your office is preferable. Tooth Extraction – Causes, Treatment and Aftercare Explained by Dentist in Vienna, Virginia

July 1, 2014

Gum disease can seriously damage or loosen your tooth. Unfortunately, if your tooth is seriously damaged, then you need to immediately visit a dental clinic for suitable treatment and guidance. Tooth extraction is a process of removing a decayed, damaged, or loosened tooth from its socket in the bone. Only a professional dentist, who specializes in surgeries of the mouth, can extract a tooth.

Why it is done?

Tooth extraction is an essential treatment, when decay or an abscessed tooth is so severe that no other treatment will cure the infection.

Initially, if your tooth is damaged, broken, or decayed, you dentist will try to fix it with a filling, crown, or any other suitable treatment. Sometimes, if the damage is beyond repair, the tooth needs to be extracted. Here are some reasons for tooth extractions:

1.    Some individuals have extra teeth / tooth that block other teeth from coming in.
2.    Sometime baby teeth don’t fall in time to allow the permanent teeth come in.
3.    People getting braces may need teeth extracted to create room for the teeth that are being moved into place.
4.    Individual receiving cancer treatment may develop infected teeth because drugs used for curing cancer may weaken the immune system. Infected teeth may need to be extracted.
5.    Some teeth may need to be removed if they could become a source of infection after an organ transplant.
6.    Wisdom teeth are need to be removed if they are decayed, cause pain, or have an infection.

Before extracting your tooth, your dentist will offer you a local anesthetic to numb the region where the tooth will be extracted. A powerful, general anesthetic may be used, especially if more than one teeth are to be removed. General anesthetic avoids pain in the entire body and making you sleep during the treatment.

After a tooth is extracted, you may require stitches. You can softly bite down on a cotton gauze pad placed over the wound to prevent the bleeding. The extracted tooth can be replaced with a denture, an implant, or a bridge. A bridge is a replacement for one or more (but not all) of the teeth and may be permanent or removable.

How it is done.

Mainly, there are 2 different types of extractions:

1.    A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that can be seen in the mouth. General dentist commonly do simple extractions. In a simple extraction, the dentist loosens the tooth with an instrument called an elevator. Then the dentist uses an instrument called a forceps to remove the tooth.
2.    A surgical tooth extraction is a complicated process. Normally performed by oral surgeons, this treatment is employed when a tooth is broken off at the gum line or has not come into the mouth yet. The doctor makes a tiny cut into your gum. In some cases, to extract the tooth, doctor may remove some of the bone around the tooth or cut the tooth in half.

For a surgical tooth extraction, you will receive a local anesthetic, and you may have anesthesia via a vein (intravenous). Individuals with specific medical or behavioral conditions and young children may require general anesthesia.

What to expect after surgery

The recovery period, in most cases, lasts only a few days. Follow these steps for speedy recovery:

1.    Consume painkillers as prescribed by your oral surgeon or dentist. Apply a cold pack or ice to the outside of your mouth to get rid of pain and swelling.
2.    After 24 hours of treatment, gargle your mouth mildly with warm water few times a day to decrease swelling and relive pain. Prepare your own salt water at home by mixing 1 tsp of salt in a medium-sized glass of warm water.
3.    Don’t indulge yourself into physical activities, as it may increase bleeding.
4.    Quite smoking
5.    Consume soft foods, like pudding, gelatin, or a thin soup. As healing progresses, slowly add solid foods to your diet.
6.    When you sleep, don’t lie flat as this may prolong bleeding. Keep your head up with pillows.
7.    Don’t rub the area with your tongue.
8.    Do not use sucking motions, like when using a straw to drink.
9.    Carefully clean your teeth and tongue.

How well it works.

Tooth extraction can avoid the spread of infection to other areas of your mouth.

When to call a dentist?

A tooth extraction should be done at the earliest to check the spread of infection and more severe problems. If the damage is serious, in which a root canal treatment might not save the tooth, your oral surgeon or dentist may suggest tooth extraction and an implant or bridge installed.

However, call your oral surgeon if:

1.    The swelling gets worse instead of healing
2.    You experience fever, chills, or redness
3.    Your experience trouble in swallowing
4.    Constant bleeding
5.    The area continuous to bleed after the first 24 hours
6.    Your tongue, lip, or chin feel numb more than 3-4 hours after the procedure
7.    You experience excess of pain

Remember, after treatment; avoid smoking or use of tobacco as it reduces the healing ability of your body. If you do smoke, the sucking motion of inhaling may dislodge or loosen the blood clot that is necessary for healing. Top Causes of Bad Breath to Avoid

May 28, 2014

Medically known as halitosis, bad breath not only causes from irregular dental health habits but there are many other reasons for it. It is much more than embarrassment and may be a sign of other oral problems. Here are some top reasons for the cause of bad breath.

Lack of Oral Hygiene: A well-maintained oral hygiene is the first and the primary step, if you want to avoid the bad breath, and other oral problems. If you do not brush and floss your teeth regularly, the harmful bacteria may attack tooth enamel, which may further lead to tooth decay and gum diseases. Even replace your toothbrush every few months, as large number bacteria can live in your toothbrush.

Brushing and Flossing: At the time, when we sleep, the production of saliva slows down, and bad breath causing bacteria begins to breed. Brushing and flossing your teeth before sleeping will keep your mouth clean during the night. According to dentist, saliva act as a natural mouthwash, hence try to breath from nose to avoid your saliva from drying up.

The Food You Eat: The type of air that you exhale depends on the sort of food that you eat. The food with the strong odor once digested is absorbed into bloodstream and carried to the lung that is exhaled. You cannot get rid of it, unless the entire food is passed away from your body. You can temporarily cover these foul smells by brushing, flossing and rinsing with mouthwash. Hence, try to avoid eating certain types of food such as garlic, meat, high-fat food, etc. to eliminate bad breath.

Gum Diseases: Bad breath may be a sign of other oral problems such as gum disease. If you are an individual who is suffering from gum disease, then you must visit a dental clinic as soon as possible. Gum diseases are the root for bad breath and requires professional treatment.

Dry Mouth: Dry mouth is a medical condition in which the flow of saliva decreases in the mouth. Biologically, saliva acts as a natural mouthwash for eliminating the food particles in between the teeth. As per American Dental Association, dry mouth is caused due to continuous inhaling of air through the mouth. Therefore, try to keep your mouth salivate by chewing sugarless gum so that you can avoid bad breath due to dry mouth.

Smoking: Smoking is another leading reason for the cause of bad breath. It makes your mouth dry, resulting in bad breath. Cigarettes contain harmful chemicals that can cause bad breath and increases the chances of oral cancer. Therefore, quit smoking as soon as possible.

Tongue: Surprisingly, the tongue is also the most common reason of bad breath. The food particles, bacteria and other post-nasal accumulate on the “fur” of the tongue and begins to breed. It cannot be removed only by brushing, but requires a special tool to clean your tongue. Therefore, do not forget to clean your tongue on a daily basis.

There are many other causes of bad breath such as yeast infection, poorly fitted dental appliances, dental caries, etc. You can eliminate all the oral health problems, simply by visiting a dental clinic at least once in a month.
