Cosmetic Dental Treatments to Beautify Your Smile

October 6, 2014

From major repairs to subtle changes, dentists can perform a wide variety of procedures to beautify your smile. Different techniques and options are available to restore teeth that are misshapen, chipped, discolored or missing. Qualified dentists can reshape teeth, restore worn teeth, close gaps, or correct the length of teeth. Some common procedures include bleaching, crowns, veneers, bonding, and reshaping and contouring. Many of these treatments not only beautify the smile, but they can correct oral problems, as well.

Bleaching

Bleaching is one of the most common processes that help whiten teeth. While some people choose bleaching treatment to make their stains disappear, others choose it to make their teeth look brighter.

Teeth discoloration occurs in the visible part of a tooth, the enamel, and the cause could be anything ranging from consumption of certain foods and drinks to inadequate dental hygiene. Teeth discoloration can also be hereditary or due to aging.

Bleaching can be performed at home or by your dentist in his or her office. Many individuals prefer at-home bleaching option because it is very convenient. At home bleaching option, however, take at least two to four weeks to produce the desired results. In contrast to at-home bleaching option, in-office option delivers quick results. It takes one or two 45-minute to an hour visits to dentist’s office in order to achieve the desired results.

Crowns

Dental crowns or caps cover an entire tooth to fix or restore it to its original shape and appearance. Crowns are a bit costly; hence, patients should choose them only when other procedures might seem ineffective or are ineffective. Of all the cosmetic dental restorations, crowns have the longest life, but the treatment for crowns is also the most time-consuming one.

Veneers

Veneers are thin shells of plastic or porcelain that your dentist places over the front portion of teeth in order to change the color and shape of your teeth. Patients can choose veneers if their teeth are chipped, unevenly spaced, discolored, oddly shaped, or crooked. The treatment is very comfortable with little or no anesthesia required.

Veneers are an alternative to dental crowns, which as said earlier, are a bit costly. The procedure requires dentists to take an imprint of each tooth. Imprints are sent to a lab where custom veneers are made. When custom-made veneers are back from the lab, your dentist will cement them directly onto the surface of each tooth. Before cementing, your dentist will buff your teeth lightly so that the veneers adhere to the teeth properly. Dentist may use a special light to expedite the veneers cementing process.

Veneers are cheaper than crowns. Additionally, in contrast to dental bonding, the life expectancy of veneers is longer. Veneers’ color stability is also better.

Bonding

Dental bonding involves using tooth-colored material to change color or fill in gaps of teeth. The treatment requires only one-time office visit. Dental bonding can last for many years if proper care is taken. The treatment is also ideal if teeth are slightly decayed or chipped. Further, dentists can also use bonding material to fill small cavities, as well as close small gaps between teeth. Sometimes, bonding can be used to change the shape of a tooth.

Reshaping and Contouring

Reshaping and contouring, is a cosmetic dental procedure to correct crooked, chipped, irregularly shaped or overlapping teeth. Dentists commonly use this procedure to alter the shape, length or position of teeth. The procedure also helps fix small problems with bite. Reshaping and contouring, is ideal for individuals with strong and healthy teeth but who want minor changes to their smile.
