Dr. Neil Flenniken, an Experienced Dentist in Vienna, Uses Cone Bean Technology for Dental Treatments

November 21, 2014

Because of technological advancement, the field of dentistry is constantly evolving. Every year, hundreds of new dental tools are poured into the market to help dentists offer more comfortable oral treatments to their patients. Dental radiology too has undergone revolutionary technological shifts in the last three decades. During that period, the field of dentistry has gone from the dip tank for automatic processing to panoramic to digital radiology. Well, it is 2014 and the field of dentistry has arrived at the 3-D revolution with cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT). The latter is the most advanced dental imaging software with all new set of standards.

Being one of the most reputed dental clinics in Vienna, Monarch Smiles is a one-stop destination to all your oral problems. We have skilled and experienced dentists, patient-friendly environment, and latest dental tools to offer dental treatments in the most relaxed way possible. We know, adopting latest tools is not only good for us, but is also beneficial for our patients. As a part of our habit of adopting new technologies, we are using Cone Beam Computerized Tomography to offer world-class dental treatments to our patients.

Looked upon as the most advanced and useful dental imaging software, Cone-Beam Computerized Tomography is swiftly becoming the de facto maxillofacial imaging technology for accurate diagnosis that can help plan suitable surgical and implant treatment. The decisive difference between CBCT and its ancestors is the term: customary CT scans record data with a helical, fan-shaped beam that emits images to detectors placed in an arc around the patient, whereas CBCT systems utilize a cone-shaped beam with a bigger, adaptable field of view (FOV). Cone Beam technology covers the entire volume of different areas of interest in one rotation, while ordinary CT requires numerous rotations around the patients to yield a complete picture.

Why Cone Beam Computerized technology is the Best?

CBCT is Faster & Safer – As CBCT takes images in a single rotation, the scan time is faster than that of ordinary spiral CT systems. Moreover, CBCT allows practitioners to regulate the amount of radiations; hence, patients will be exposed to lesser radiation. Because of these, CBCT is safe and fast.

CBCT Captures Images with Greater Accuracy – 3D cuboidal structures known as Voxels inside the CBCT allow dentists to capture 3D images with greater accuracy. Moreover, 3D images can be used to show certain tissues, observe different angles, and display changing thickness & depths.

CBCT offers Versatility – CBCT is versatile in nature because it can be used for traditional forms of radiography, such as panoramic, cephalometric, and 2D imaging. This not only offers dental practitioners additional diagnostic tools but also makes the transition of 3D imaging easier for dental assistants and other staff members.

CBCT is Designed to Offer Greater Comfort – Lower emission of radiation for dental imaging offers a great peace of mind to patients. CBCT systems are designed specifically with the enhanced patient comfort in mind. Moreover, it has the potential to offer patients with complete 3D renderings of their oral problem in a visual manner, which in turn can allow these patients to play a key role in their own treatment.

CBCT Lowers Operational Costs – Although CBCT systems are the most sophisticated and advanced equipment, they radically reduce treatment schedules, allowing insurance claims to be generated and handled in a lesser timeframe.

At Monarch Smiles, Dr. Neil Flenniken and other fellow dentists use CBCT systems to offer accurate dental treatments. Patients visiting Monarch Smiles are benefiting from the advent of CBCT by getting an accurate diagnosis, improved surgical and orthodontic treatment planning, and eventually safer and more predictable surgeries in the areas of orthodontics, temporomandibular joint disorder, maxilla-facial reconstructive trauma, and implantology.

Dr. Suzan Flenniken, a dentist in Vienna, Answers, Why Dental Care is Important During Pregnancy

October 20, 2014

For a woman, pregnancy is an emotional and busy time. It’s emotional because a new member will soon join the family, and it’s busy as a result of appointments with doctor and preparing for the baby’s arrival. Periodic visits to the dental clinic get lost in the busy schedules, and the wellbeing of your gums and teeth drop down the priority list. As a woman, you may also ask yourself whether it’s OK to go the dentist, particularly when it comes to X-rays.

According to dentists across the globe, it is safe to visit a dental clinic when you are pregnant. In fact, it  is the best way to monitor the wellbeing of your gums and teeth, and to avoid any bad impact on your developing child. If X-rays are required during the treatments, a dentist will cover your abdomen with a lead apron and will take the least number of X-rays essential for diagnosis and confidently offer you a proper treatment. Moreover, with the advancement in the medical science, digital X-rays significantly reduce the amount of radiation required to generate the image.

When you visit a dental clinic, your dentist will give you useful oral care tips – encourage a good oral hygiene and eating habits. During the pregnancy, whatever you eat can greatly affect the health of your teeth; therefore, it is essential to eat food low in sugar to prevent tooth decay. When you visit a dental clinic during the pregnancy, you reward yourself with a great opportunity to communicate with your dentist about pregnancy’s implications on gums and teeth. Moreover, you can also discuss issues such as the effect of bad oral care on the health of the baby.

During the pregnancy, morning sickness uncovers teeth to surplus acid. A woman suffering from morning sickness is at a great risk of acid erosion of teeth and tooth decay. Therefore, if you experience this medical condition during the pregnancy, it is recommended to consult your dentist for appropriate treatment and guidelines.

During the pregnancy, many women also complain about bleeding gums, especially when they brush their teeth. Furthermore, some pregnant women also complain about a bump on their gums that wasn’t there previously and occasionally, it bleeds. It has been observed that hormones that promote pregnancy can also produce the risk of gingivitis or worsen existing gum disease. Knowingly or unknowingly, if you are not taking proper care of your teeth and gums, then you may experience some unwanted consequences in the coming future.

Maintaining a good oral health is extremely essential during the pregnancy, because it can affect the overall health of the body. A large group of researchers has shown a connection between gum and preterm birth. If you are pregnant, then it is a good idea to see a dentist for an exam in order to avoid any dental problems. Professional Tooth Whitening – 8 Unknown Facts Explained by Dentist in VA (Virginia)

October 10, 2014

There are many alternatives available in the market if you are looking for tooth whitening services in Virginia. There are many hi-tech dental clinics in Virginia, but experienced dentist like Neil Flenniken and Suzan Rismani-Flenniken in Vienna, VA, are hard to find. However, it always helps to have an understanding of how the procedure works in detail, what are pre-preparations, what sort of the care should be taken during and after the treatment and many more. Here are some interesting facts explained by dentist in Virginia about tooth whitening.

Cleaning and Whitening Are Two Different Process

It is a widespread confusion around the world that Cleaning and Whitening are one and same. Our teeth look yellowish or dirty because of deposits and superficial stains. Such type of stains can be removed with the help cleaning treatment as such problems do not require a tooth whitening treatment.

Tooth Whitening is a Chemical Process

Tooth Whitening or Bleaching is a chemical process which is using a peroxide group of compounds such as carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. This peroxide compounds when comes in contact with the tooth surface, discharges free radical oxygen, which enters the outer layer of the tooth and oxidize the color producing pigments giving it a whiter look. Dentist in Virginia is proficient in this treatment.

Tooth Whitening Process can be Slow or Quick

Time for tooth whitening totally depends upon the type of treatment offered to you (either in the office or home). It may require from about a one hour office visit to multiple weeks before you get the desired shade of your teeth.

Tooth Whitening is not Permanent

Bleaching is temporary and not a permanent treatment. The effect of treatment may last from one to three years. However, with proper care and touch ups, you can maintain a long-lasting white smile.

Post Whitening Care is Vital

Once you are done with your teeth whitening treatment, try to avoid food such as tea, wine, soda, coffee, etc. which can cause stains. Also avoid the use of tobacco and alcohol. Additionally, one should maintain a healthy oral care routine to preserve the effect of tooth whitening.

No Side-Effects, If Done Professionally

Normally, we believe there are some negative consequences of bleaching, but if done professionally there are no serious side effects. You can contact an experienced dentist in Virginia for further information on treatment.

All Type of Tooth Discoloration are Not Open to Whitening

Some people may have malformed enamel, and some may suffer from intrinsically discolored teeth since their childhood. For such patients, bleaching will not work, and a person will have to search for other options like crowns or veneers. For a better solution, consult your dentist in Virginia.

Tooth Whitening is Not for Everyone

You might not be eligible for tooth whitening, if you are a child, a pregnant woman or if your teeth have cavities, gum diseases, pending dental work and exposed tooth roots. You are not a good candidate, if you are allergic to peroxides, and you have restorations such as veneers, bonded filling or crowns on the front teeth, unless they are removed prior post bleaching.

How to Overcome Dental Phobia? Explains Dentist in VA, Dr. Neil Flenniken

October 2, 2014

For most patients, even the thought of visiting a dental clinic sends a jolt of anxiety through their body. Due to some known or unknown reasons, we all fear the dentist, and that’s what we call dental phobia. However, according to Dr. Neil Flenniken, an experienced dentist in VA, when it comes to triggering a fear response, small things can set people off like an upcoming trip to the dentist.

Dental phobia in an individual can set in early. Frightening comments from friends and parents, such as “If you don’t brush and floss your teeth daily, you will have to visit a dental clinic,” can leave an enduring negative impression. More commonly, an upsetting experience at the dental clinic during childhood causes nervousness that carries over into adulthood, says Dr. Neil Flenniken, a D.D.S. from Howard University in Washington D.C. However, today, with the advancement in science and technology, there is no need for anyone to fear dental pain, because modern dentistry is virtually painless.

Latest Dental Tools and Products

As stated above, the availability of latest tools and products has made the modern dentistry almost painless. The latest dental equipment has come a long way over the past few decades. For instance, needles that inject numbing agents are slimmer compared with flatter versions of the past. In the past, needles were used repeatedly and sterilized between patients; however, these days, needles once used are disposed permanently. Dr. Flenniken says repeated use blunts a needle’s point with the time, triggering more pain upon injection. The latest set of dental tools and methods aid dentist slow the rate at which medicine works its way into the gums, reducing uneasiness from the pressure of the medication as it’s instantly released from the syringe.

Calming Dental Anxiety

A long list of medications and new dental products help lessen pain, too. Products like dental patches and topical anesthetic used to numb gums keep patients relaxed during injections and deep cleaning. During the dental procedures, Nitrous Oxide is used to relax patients and intravenous conscious sedation is used to ease pain and discomfort. To truly calm your dental phobia, it never hurts to remember that inside the dentist’s white coat is a person who cares as much about your comfort as your teeth.

Tips to Overcome Dental Phobia

Are you experiencing oral problems, but not visiting a dental clinic because of dental phobia. Here are some useful tips by Dr. Neil Flenniken, an experienced dentist in Virginia, that will help you overcome your fear.

•    Talk to your dentist, and if he or she doesn’t respond or comply to your questions, then you should find another one. A good dentist should begin a visit by asking you formal questions related to you, your family, and your profession. Such questions will create a friendly and comfortable atmosphere and will remove the anxiety.

•    Do some homework before you visit a dental clinic. Ask your dentist every question you have in your mind in terms of your problem and respective treatment. There is nothing wrong in asking such questions to your dentist.

•    Give a cue during the treatment. At any point of time, during a dental procedure, if you are uncomfortable and want your dentist to stop working immediately, then give him a cue. For example, you can raise your hand to let your dentist know about your condition.

If your dentist is not skilled at certain oral treatment, then is advisable to seek someone who has the proper experience in that treatment.

What your friends, family members, and colleagues have to say about the dentist you plan to visit?

The best and the experienced dentist will definitely have a huge fan base, word-of-mouth and recommendations from their patients. Before visiting a dental clinic, ask your friends, family members, and colleagues to state their views so the dentist you plan to visit.

A Dentist in Vienna Explains, Why and When You Need Impacted Wisdom Teeth Removal

August 27, 2014

Also referred as the “Third Molar”, wisdom tooth is equally important as other teeth. However, they are more open to problems during their eruption (breaking through the gum tissue). As the wisdom teeth are the last to erupt-normally between the ages of 17 and 21-oftentimes, there is a tiny or no room left for them in the mouth. Therefore, wisdom teeth may emerge partially sideways or become trapped (impacted), causing pain, infection, and gum-line and facial swelling. Unfortunately, when any of these conditions arise in your mouth, you should consult your dentist, who will further determine the course of treatment, and decide whether wisdom tooth extraction is required or not.

When you visit a dentist, he or she will judge the level of impaction, the peril of infection, and the best course of treatment to implement. Here we discuss some of the most common signs and symptoms, why you need wisdom tooth extraction, and what the treatment is.

Why Wisdom Tooth Extraction is Essential

Wisdom teeth removal becomes essential if the area of impaction is prone to swelling, leading to pain, or if the tooth is struck at an awkward angle. If this infected area is not addressed immediately, it may cause infection, eventually worsening the problem.

Fortunately, the process of wisdom tooth removal is simple and instant, of course, with IV sedation dentistry. After the treatment, your dentist or oral surgeon may advise you to rest at home for two to three days. Because you may experience little discomfort and pain after the treatment, eat only the dentist-recommended foods for the first week. Strictly obey the guidelines and instructions provided by your dentist to ensure a smooth and pleasant recovery.

Signs and Symptoms of Impacted Wisdom Teeth

More than 70% of the population is likely to be affected by impacted wisdom teeth; hence, it is possible that you will experience this at some point in your life. Here are some of the most common signs of impacted wisdom teeth that you can detect by yourself at home:

•    Bad breath
•    Red and swollen gums
•    Pus coming from the gum line
•    Pain where the tooth is growing
•    Teeth emerging at an awkward angle
•    Trouble in opening mouth and to swallow

Wisdom Tooth Removal

The treatment of wisdom tooth extraction is a common oral surgery. However, extraction of wisdom teeth before eruption comprises a surgical process that is far from an ordinary tooth removal process. Some local dentists may be skilled in removing impacted or un-erupted wisdom teeth; however, in most cases, you require the services of an oral surgeon. The dentist you visit for wisdom teeth removal must have professional equipment and skills to perform the treatment.

Wisdom Tooth Removal Aftercare

After wisdom tooth removal, it is essential that you obey a strict oral care routine, as well as follow these recommendations:

•    For the first 24 hours after tooth extraction, do not rinse your mouth.
•    Eat soft, easy-to-chew, and liquid diet on the day of tooth extraction and the day after tooth extraction.
•    Chew the food with teeth that are far from the extraction site.
•    Brush and floss the other teeth, but avoid the teeth and gum next to the extraction socket.
•    After the first 24 hours, before and after you eat, delicately rinse the socket with warm salt water.

When to Consult a Dentist?

If you experience pain, swelling, or any other symptom in the area behind your last molar then it may be associated with an impacted wisdom tooth. Visit your dentist for checkup at your earliest.

For more information about Wisdom teeth removal, feel free to contact us at https://www.monarchsmiles.com/contact-us.html.

Dentist in VA, Explains How to Maintain Good Oral Health After Gum Disease Treatment

July 29, 2014

Most patients across the globe experience the gum disease because they don’t pay proper attention to their daily oral hygiene routines. As a result, they need to undergo some sort of gum disease treatment, whether it is a surgical intervention to excise diseased tissue or a thorough cleaning to remove bacteria from underneath the gums. However, if you adopt your old habits after undergoing gum disease treatment, then there is a higher chance that you may face a serious risk for a relapse of gum disease.

To diminish the chances of developing any serious oral issues after gum disease treatment, it is essential that you maintain a good oral routine after being treated by your dentist. In fact, you should discuss suitable oral care habits and techniques with your dentist as a part of the treatment planning process.

To maintain good oral health after gum disease treatment, you should brush twice a day for at least two minutes at a time. Along with brushing, daily flossing will also help you to decrease the presences of plaque and tartar that contain the oral bacteria that can lead to gum disease. According to dentists, patients with a history of gum disease should also add a good-quality mouthwash to their routine as a supplementary anti-bacterial measure.

Remember, after gum disease treatment, nothing can go as far as a proper dental hygiene; therefore, don’t forget to obey these basic oral care rules that are as follows:

  1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, for two minutes
  2. After brushing, don’t forget to floss
  3. Make use of an antibacterial mouthwash, as it ensures all round protection from plaque and tartar
  4. Quit smoking!  It can damage your gum tissues, and decrease healing time after gum disease treatment
  5. Visit your dentist every three months, to remove plaque buildup and maintain good oral health

For patients who have undergone gum disease treatment, it becomes even more imperative for them to keep up with their dental visits to their dentist and hygienist.

The most important point to remember is  when you protect your mouth against gum diseases, you directly promote good health and wellness. A healthy mouth truly is the gateway to a healthy body.  Good oral care routines and routine cleanings are needed in preserving oral health and keeping gum disease away.

After going through initial gum disease treatments, your dentist and hygienist will have you visit your dental clinic every three months to maintain good oral health.  Seeing your dentist and hygienist four times a year will help them keep your gum disease in remission and keep your chances of reinfection at bay.

Best Teeth and Gum Care Tips by Dr. Neil Flenniken, a Dentist in Vienna

July 4, 2014

Recently, a survey on oral care concluded that most people are aware about their poor oral health, and knew that it can affect chronic diseases, including heart disease and diabetes. Still, highly occupied by day-to-day mechanical schedules, most people knowingly ignore their oral care routine. However, caring for your teeth and gum is not at all a daunting task. With proper care, your teeth and gums can stay healthy during your life. The healthier your gums and teeth are, the minimum possibility you have for gum disease and tooth decay.

How Should You Care for Your Teeth and Gums?

There are 5 basic steps to caring for gums and teeth:

1.    Proper Brushing
2.    Proper Flossing
3.    Correct Eating Habits
4.    Regular Visit to Dental Clinic
5.    Rinsing

Tips for Brushing Teeth

No matter how busy life you live, instead of once try to brush at least twice a day. If possible, brush after every meal. Wait for 30 minutes after eating, so that any enamel that softened due to acid re-hardens and does not get brushed away. Proper brushing removes plaque, a coating of bacteria that sticks to teeth. When bacteria in plaque are exposed to food, they produce acids, which further leads to cavities.

When you brush:

1.    Take a pea-sized dab of toothpaste on the head of the toothbrush (Use a toothbrush with soft bristles).
2.    Hold the toothbrush against the teeth at an inclination of a 45-degree to the gum line.
3.    Move the brush across the teeth using a small rotational motion. Gently continue with this circular motion cleaning one tooth at a time. Hold the tips of the bristles against the gum line. Do not press the brush so hard that the bristles lie flat against the teeth. Keep patience while brushing and allow the bristles reach into spaces between teeth.
4.    Brush across the top of the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Ensure the bristles get into the crevices and grooves.
5.    Use the same rotational motion to clean the backside of the upper and lower teeth – the side that faces the tongue.
6.    While cleaning the inner side of the bottom front teeth, incline the head in an up-and-down position towards the bottom inside of the mouth and move the toothbrush in a small circle.
7.    While cleaning the inner side of top front teeth, incline the head in an up-and-down position with the tip of the head pointing towards the upper surface of the mouth. Move the toothbrush in a small circle.
8.    Offer your tongue some brush strokes–brushing from the back of your tongue forward. This process will eradicate bacteria and freshens your breath.
9.    After brushing your teeth for 2-3 minutes, properly rinse your mouth with water.
10.    Do not forget to replace your toothbrush with a new one every 3-4 months.

Tips for Flossing your Teeth

Floss your teeth at least once a day. Flossing eliminates food particles and plaque between the teeth, where your toothbrush cannot reach. If plaque is not removed, it can solidify into tartar that should be removed professionally by a dentist or hygienist.

When you floss:

1.    Take about an 18-inch floss strip from the dispenser.
2.    Wind the floss around the fingers, leaving a 1-inch section open for flossing. Start flossing the top teeth first, then the bottom.
3.    Place the floss in your mouth and use your index fingers to push the floss between the teeth. Do not push too hard as it can injure the gums.
4.    Move the floss up and down against the tooth, and up and around the gum line. When you floss, a C-shape should form around the tooth.
5.    If needed, use a clean section of floss and wind the used section of floss around the fingers.

Proper Eating Habit for Dental Health

Your dental health entirely depends on your eating habits. For a good oral health, eat different types of food, but try to skip those foods that contain sugars and starches. Such types of foods produce acids in the mouth and the longer they stay in the mouth, the more they damage the teeth. Eating food that is more sugary can lead to tooth decay, as most people don’t brush their teeth after snacks. Avoid eating starchy and sugary foods like,

1.    Potato chips
2.    Candies, Cookies, Pie, and Cakes
3.    Sugary gum
4.    Breadsticks and Crackers
5.    Dried fruits and raisins

Regularly Visit a Dental Clinic

Visit a dental clinic in your area at least once every six months. To preserve healthy teeth and gums, it is essential to have periodic checkups and professional cleanings. You should also concern your dentist if you experience pain in your teeth or mouth or bleeding. Ask your dentist about dental sealants. The sealant is the material used to cover the upper, chewing surfaces of the teeth. This protective covering guards the tooth from decay.

Tips for Rinsing

According to the American Dental Association, along with four oral care tips mentioned above, antibacterial mouthwash checks the growth of bacteria that cause plaque and gum disease. Fluoride mouthwash also reduces the chances of tooth decay. The American Dental Association does not recommend a fluoride mouthwash for children ages 6 or below, as they may swallow the liquid.
